In May, U.S. Central Command Commander Admiral Brad Cooper told Congress that the United States had all the munitions it needed to defend its forces and carry out potential operations.

However, the Pentagon has acknowledged that 410 U.S. service members have been killed or wounded since July 7 alone.

Three U.S. soldiers were killed in Iranian missile and drone attacks on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan on July 17 and 18. In another attack on a U.S. base in Erbil, Iraq, on July 18, one American soldier was killed and another was wounded.

Admiral Cooper, speaking to CBS on Sunday, continued to downplay the risk posed by declining weapons stockpiles. Asked whether he was concerned about the safety of U.S. troops, he said: “I’m not concerned at all.”

Hundreds of Buildings and Dozens of U.S. Aircraft Damaged

Ultimately, a report by the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of War has provided a clearer picture of the extent of the damage inflicted on U.S. forces.

According to the report, Iranian attacks during the war destroyed or damaged hundreds of buildings and structures at U.S. bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, and Jordan.

The report also revealed that dozens of U.S. aircraft were destroyed or damaged, including four F-15 fighter jets, 12 KC-135 aerial refueling aircraft, and as many as 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones.

Under these circumstances, one of the U.S. officials who spoke with The Intercept warned that the mounting pressures resulting from the war could eventually reach a point at which the U.S. military would no longer be able to continue the war effectively—a situation he described as “collapse.”
