Explosion of an Offending Supertanker South of the Strait of Hormuz

The Public Relations office of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy issued a statement announcing that an offending supertanker exploded and caught fire after striking a naval mine south of the Strait of Hormuz.

The statement notes that the supertanker—carrying over 2 million barrels of crude oil—had deactivated all of its radar and navigation systems. Ignoring warnings from the IRGC Navy, the vessel attempted to exit via an unauthorized route south of the Strait of Hormuz, at which point it struck a naval mine and exploded.

The IRGC Navy declares that the owners and crews of vessels in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman are held accountable for traversing unauthorized routes; any activity that disregards the security of this Strait will be met with a decisive response.
