Poem on the occasion of Tabas

Here we present you a poem composed on this modern day miracle by Iran’s English language poet, Dr. Hasan Najafi:

At last the anger burst his breast,

Rendered the denizen of the White House distressed,

The sands of Tabas became your grave

When you dare to invade the land that spurns the knave,

To you turns inhospitable the coast,

What else Iran to you could host?

Why not we snatch the gleaning steel

Against your wrongs so often we feel,

It’s peremptory to set your wrong sight

In an avenging and lesson-giving fight,

Defeat propagates around

From every plane's bursting sound,

In silent horror over the desert vast

The commandos with their helicopters fell quite fast,

Those who were lucky to survive had no free hand

To guard their faces from the scorching sand,

The sultry sun had gained the middle sky

And neither a tree, nor a herb was nigh,

Confused the way, confounded they; whom to obey,

Shrill roared the winds as death swooped on the prey,

The US President when stoops so low to folly

What balm can soothe their melancholy!

Foolhardy the American presidential race,

Looking for easy fame they perish in disgrace,

Lures them their fatal doom,

Tempts them their new gloom,

You are un-pitied none left to mourn,

Alone, unblessed and forlorn,

Fair laughs the morn, soft the zephyr blows,

While proudly riding in gilded vessel Iran goes.

To seize the adversary, whirlwinds sway,

As Americans melt into clay without delay,

Long years of havoc urge our destined course,

Steadfast we stand to defeat the tyrant force.

Impelled you with steps unceasing to pursue

But mocks you Iran’s fleeting glorious view,

Our fields where summer spreads profusion round,

Our towns with splendour crowned.

You do whatever you can

Now Iran is great, and you a Lilliputian man.

Lakes, forests, plains, cities – See how wide

They are sure our pomp, yet humble is our pride.

The circle bounding earth and skies is Iran,

You don’t like? Overrun it if you can.

Iran is the spot that warms the soul,

It is a part needed to harmonize the whole.

Now Iran is beyond Elysium

blest,

Reflects new glories on its President’s breast,

O' Arrogant American! Behold your doom,

Perished in Tabas to be dispatched to eternal gloom,

Your assault cannot choke our patriot throats,

Nor can you bribe nor barter our votes,

Your elephantine airborne force that knew no law

Like Abraha's elephant perished as if chewed up straw.
