The birth of the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) is an enlightening dawn for human history; a Prophet who himself was the embodiment of mercy and unity. Today, this blessed birth is intertwined with the sublime concept of "Unity Week"—an initiative gifted to the world's Muslims by the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini (RA), and after him, the Martyred Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Grand Ayatollah Khamenei, who emphasized its preservation and consolidation with all their being and strived for this noble ideal until their very last breath.
The period between the 12th and 17th of Rabi' al-Awwal—which are, respectively, the dates considered by Sunnis and Shias for the Prophet's (PBUH) birth—was named "Unity Week" at the suggestion of Imam Khomeini (RA). His aim in doing so was to transform a historical difference over the date of birth into an opportunity for solidarity and greater closeness among Islamic schools of thought, so that all Muslims could unite around their shared common axis, the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Citing the noble verse, "وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِیعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا" ("And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided"), he insisted on everyone clinging to the divine rope and avoiding disunity, leaving this testament as a legacy until the moment of his martyrdom.
The Qur'an's emphasis on unity is an echo in the heart of every conscious Muslim. Verses such as, "إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ" ("The believers are but brothers"), call us to religious brotherhood. Inspired by these teachings, the Martyred Leader always believed that if the Islamic Ummah is united, security, progress, and synergy among Islamic countries will be achieved, and no colonial power will be able to overcome them.
