The Goal of Ethics: Inner Freedom, Not Hardship

Al-Ghazālī does not present ethics as a burden.

He says:

 

> Good character lightens the heart; it does not weigh it down.

 

 

 

Envy, resentment, greed, and hypocrisy are chains.

Virtue is liberation.

 

In the end, ethics for al-Ghazālī means: a free heart, a purified intention, and a livable life.
