A Positive View of Suffering: Steps to Evolution and Progress

Suffering is not always a flaw or error in creation, but an integral part of the human experience that can play important roles:

Suffering and hardship, like pain that warns us, can force us to change. Overcoming challenges increases our capacity for problem-solving, resilience, and flexibility. Without facing hardship, we may never have reached the most complete version of ourselves. This is why human survival has lasted.

When we lose something or suffer, we appreciate what we have and better understand health and comfort. This experience makes us feel the true values ​​of life, relationships, and good moments with all our being. And this difference, that life has ups and downs, makes it break out of that monotony and find meaning for life for humans.

Perhaps suffering leads us to a deeper search for meaning in life. As noted psychologist Viktor Frankl suggests, we can find meaning even in suffering. This meaning can be in personal growth, helping others, or a deeper understanding of the human condition.

Perhaps one reason suffering exists is to show us the value of joy, peace, and pleasure. Without experiencing sorrow, how could we experience the height of joy?

 

So, instead of seeing suffering simply as a law of human creation, we can see it as an opportunity to learn, grow, find meaning, and gain a deeper understanding of life and connection with others.

 

Although excessive and unnecessary suffering is certainly devastating and affects a person's life and functioning, it is no longer normal suffering, such as depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, for which a person can seek help from specialists and psychologists. Psychology always focuses on helping people to deal with it constructively and reduce unnecessary suffering.
