Ehud Barak: We Have Failed to Push Iran Back Over the Past Five Years

The former Israeli prime minister sharply criticized Netanyahu’s claims regarding achievements against Iran, stating that the regime has failed to push Iran back even a few steps over the last five years.

Fars News Agency International Desk – Ehud Barak, Israel’s former defense minister and prime minister, spoke to a Hebrew-language network about the possibility of war resuming ahead of the Knesset elections. He stated that such a concern exists and is not unfounded, but noted that Netanyahu makes decisions based on his own political survival rather than the regime's interests.

Barak added that Netanyahu had warned years ago of threats not only from the Iranian front but also from the West Bank, Gaza, and Lebanon—threats that persist today.

He remarked that Netanyahu needs only a single match to ignite conflict across all these fronts, potentially launching a new war just five days before the elections if he deems it necessary.

Regarding Iran, the former prime minister said: "They [Netanyahu’s cabinet] tell us that Iran is on the verge of collapse, but that is simply not true; they have no real understanding of the situation, and these are merely empty words." Barak stated: "Over the past five years, they have failed to push Iran back even a few steps; in fact—and mark my words—I would not be surprised if I woke up one day next year to find that the Iranians had conducted a nuclear test."

He remarked: "It is a disgrace to our generation that, three years after October 7th—an event that claimed 2,500 lives—this cabinet remains in power, claiming it can lead us forward, despite having demonstrated utter strategic incompetence and unprecedented corruption."
